Fascias and Soffits in Birmingham
Moseley Roofing & Building Services
Fascias and soffits are the finish line for the whole roof: they carry the bottom row of tiles and take the water off to the drains. We replace tired roofline in UPVC and repair guttering across Birmingham, with a free inspection first.
What Fascias and Soffits Actually Do
The fascia is the board the guttering clips to and the bottom row of tiles sits on. The soffit is the board underneath, closing the gap between fascia and wall. Between them they keep weather, birds and wasps out of the roof space while the vents let the loft breathe.
When they fail, the signs start slowly and then arrive all at once: water running down the outside wall, paint peeling below the gutter line, a damp patch indoors where the wall meets the ceiling. By then water has usually been getting behind the boards for a good while.
Signs Your Roofline Needs Attention
Most roofline problems give you warning before they cost you a ceiling:
- Paint flaking or blackened patches on wooden boards.
- A visible gap where the fascia has pulled away from the wall.
- Guttering that leaks at the joints or has pulled off line.
- Birds or wasps getting into the loft edge.
- Damp patches on the inside of an outside wall, high up.
Any one of these is worth a look. The inspection is free, and most of the time we can tell from ground level and a ladder which boards are solid and which have gone.
Cap-Overs and Full Replacement
Some firms solve rotten fascias by clipping new UPVC over the top of the old timber. It is quick and it is cheap and it hides the problem: rot does not stop just because it cannot be seen, and the heavier cover eventually works the fixings loose.
We favour the full job. The old boards come off, any rotten rafter feet get repaired, the new UPVC goes onto sound timber and the guttering is re-set to fall properly towards the outlets. It takes longer and it lasts longer, and the quote reflects the real job rather than a guess.
How a Roofline Replacement Runs
Access comes first, tower or scaffold depending on the height of the eaves. The old boards and guttering come down and go away with the rubbish. New UPVC fascia and soffit go on with ventilation where the loft needs to breathe, and trims or dry verge close the edges against the weather.
Guttering is usually quoted as one job with the fascias and soffits: new boards deserve new outlets, and re-using tired guttering on them is a false economy we would rather not sell you.
If the roof itself is due replacing at the same time, roofline is cheapest to do while the access is already up. Our new roofs and re-roofing page covers that job, and the roofers in Birmingham page shows the full spread of our work.
The Free Inspection and Honest Quote
Roofline is one of those jobs where the quote depends entirely on what is behind the boards, which is why we inspect before we price anything. We check the timber, the rafter feet and the gutter run, then quote for the replacement that will actually last.
You get the photos, the reasoning and the price in plain English. If some of the boards are sound and can stay, we will say that too.
Rotting Roofline? Send Us a Photo
WhatsApp 07831 854918 a picture of the boards and guttering. We will tell you from the photo what is likely going on, then confirm it with a free inspection.
