New Roofs and Re-Roofing in Birmingham
Moseley Roofing & Building Services
Full re-roofing across Birmingham from our Moseley base. Free inspection, honest advice on repair or replace, and a quote for exactly what the job needs.
When a New Roof Is the Honest Answer
We quote repairs as repairs. That is always the starting point. But there comes a point in a roof's life where patching stops making sense: the tiles are failing across the whole field, the battens have had it, and each repair buys months rather than years.
The free inspection is what decides it, and we say which answer we have reached and why. No pressure towards a re-roof you do not need, and no pretending a dying roof can be patched forever either. If repairs will hold, we quote repairs.
What Re-Roofing Involves
A re-roof means the roof comes off and goes back on new. We strip the old tiles or slates back to the deck, then check the timbers and rafters underneath and put right anything that has suffered. New underlay goes on, then new battens, then the tiles or slates.
The job finishes at the edges and junctions: ridge tiles bedded or fixed dry, verges sealed, and leadwork at the chimneys, valleys and abutments done as part of the job, not left for another visit. When we leave, the roof is one system, not a new field with old corners.
Tiled Roofs
Most Birmingham roofs are tiled: plain tiles on the older terraces, interlocking tiles on the semis and newer builds, concrete and clay across the suburbs, with slate on plenty of the Victorian stock. Each material has its own way of wearing, and a re-roof is the chance to put right whatever the last roof got wrong.
If your tiles are the only problem and the rest of the roof is sound, a repair may be all you need. Our tiled roof repairs page covers that side of the job.
Flat Roofs on Extensions and Dormers
A pitched re-roof often shares a building with a flat roof: the extension behind, the dormer on top, the garage at the side. If the flat roof is tired too, doing both jobs together saves a second round of scaffolding and disruption later.
Our flat roofing page covers new flat roofs, replacements and repairs in their own right.
Fascias, Soffits and Gutters During a Re-Roof
The roofline is easiest to replace at the same time as the roof. The scaffolding is already up, the edge of the roof is already open, and the fascia boards that carry the bottom row of tiles are right there in front of us.
If your fascias, soffits or guttering are showing their age, we will tell you on the quote and you can decide. Doing it later means scaffold or tower hire all over again, which is why we always mention it at the time.
Leadwork on New Roofs
A new roof is only as good as its junctions. Lead soakers and cover flashings at the chimney, lead valley linings where two slopes meet, step flashings at an abutment: these are what stop water getting in where the roof changes direction.
We do lead work properly as part of every re-roof, dressed and finished at chimneys, valleys and abutments. It is the part of the job nobody sees and everybody depends on.
Scaffolding, Skips and Living Through the Job
The practical questions are the ones people actually worry about, so here are the honest answers. Scaffolding goes up first, usually a day or two before the tiles come off. A skip arrives for the old roof, and it goes away when the job is done.
Yes, it is noisy. Stripping and battening is the loudest part, and it does not last the whole job. Most households stay in while the work goes on; the roof comes off from the outside and the ceiling stays where it is. The roof is made weather-tight at the end of each working day.
Access, parking for the skip and the mess all get discussed before the job starts, so nothing on the day is a surprise.
