What Counts as a Roofing Emergency

A roofing emergency is any leak that is doing damage while you watch: water coming through the ceiling during rain, tiles or a ridge line down in the garden after wind, flashing peeled off a chimney in a storm, or a flat roof that has opened up over a bedroom. If it is getting worse by the hour, treat it as an emergency and call.

What to Do First

A few minutes of damage control is worth a lot before anyone arrives:

• Put a bucket under the drip and move anything the water can ruin.
• If the ceiling is bulging with trapped water, pierce it gently with a screwdriver so it drains in a controlled way instead of coming down all at once.
• Take photos of the leak and, if it is safe, of the roof from the ground.
• Stay off ladders and roofs in wind and rain. That is our job, not yours.

Securing the Roof

The first job is stopping the water. That might mean sheeting the damaged slope, dressing a temporary patch over a split, replacing the tiles the wind took, or clearing a choke that is backing water into the loft. We secure the roof and make the area safe before anything else gets discussed.
